15th World Press Photo Joop Swart Masterclass – Balance
World Press Photo is holding its annual Joop Swart Masterclass from November 8 to 13. Twelve talented young photographers from around the world will discuss practical and theoretical aspects of photojournalism under the guidance of six masters. The masterclass is held annually in Amsterdam, with a different theme each year. The theme for the 2008 masterclass is Balance. Participants were invited to interpret this theme in photo essays, prior to attending the masterclass. During their week in Amsterdam, they will discuss and evaluate their essays with masters and colleagues. A selection of the work has been compiled in the photo book Balance.
The photographers participating in the Joop Swart Masterclass (named after a late honorary chairman of the World Press Photo foundation) were selected from 132 nominees by an international committee earlier this year.
Book Launch: Balance
Balance is an edit of the masterclass participants’ photo essays, each with its distinctive – often widely variant – interpretation of the theme. This hardcover book also puts the stories into perspective, and provides background information on the participants and their masters.
Balance will be launched on Thursday November 13, at 19h00 at Foam_Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam. The book may be purchased for €15 at Foam, from November 14. It will also be available via the online bookshop at www.worldpressphoto.org from Tuesday 18 November.
Lecture by Maggie Steber
Throughout the week, masters will give lectures on different subjects. The main presentation, by Maggie Steber, will be made available online.
Maggie Steber, USA, has worked as a documentary photographer in more than 57 countries. Her longtime work in Haiti received the prestigious Alicia Patterson Foundation Grant and the Ernst Haas Grant. Her work appears regularly in National Geographic, Life, Newsweek, The New York Times Magazine, among many others. Her photographs are widely exhibited, and are included in museum and private collections. She has served on juries for the World Press Photo contest and the Alicia Patterson Foundation.

World Press Photo es la celebración de su anual Joop Swart Masterclass de noviembre de 8 a 13. Doce jóvenes talentosos fotógrafos de todo el mundo discutirán aspectos teóricos y prácticos de la fotografía bajo la orientación de seis maestros.
El magistral se celebra anualmente en Amsterdam, con un tema diferente cada año. El tema para el 2008 es el equilibrio magistral.
